Weighing in on Soulja Boy

Aight. The problem with soulja boy and all these dudes that make that kinda shit is that their shit is NOT HIP HOP MUSIC! It’s house music. Same format and u make up dances to it. They don’t even rap they just repeat phrases. That’s house music with a live voice instead of a sample. There’s nothin wrong wit that, it just ain’t hip hop. It’s not a matter of it being wack because they don’t rap or break, they juke and chant – that’s classic 90s HOUSE MUSIC!!!!! So there really is no debate. Corporations told you it was hip hop and u believed em. Soulja boy even believed em. He ain’t even Wack, his music is miscategorized. For him to buy into his own hype and believe himself that he is doin hiphop is his only crime. Souljadude, u are not a rapper. You don’t do hip hop. You are a house artist. Period. The next generation of rappers actually rap. At least Hammer had verses. House music is a string of hooks over danceable tracks. Sound familiar?

  1. I’m not quite sure I understand your view about labeling what Soulja Boy dose as being House Music but I can say this, O.M.G I was sittin watching the B.E.T. awards recently and thinkin is this fo real? I mean is this what the world sees as real music. I am not tryna hate on Soulja boy or any black artist tryna get paper and claim fame but damn! I mean, Wow when I watched him perform at the B. E. T. awards I was sittin in front of the T.V thinkin, artist who truly have skills gotta take a backseat to this? Don’t get me wrong I applaud him because he managed to get into the music game and take off like a rocket. The young ladies think he’s charming but charm can only go so far. Will he have longevity in the game. I seriously doubt it. Funny thing is, it isn’t about skillz anymore. It’s all about swag, popularity and gimmicks. The 70’s promoted good music from talented artist. The 80’s was also cool because artist like Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin still held it down and rap music was not yet introduced to bubble gum rap. = ) There were rappers like Eric B. & Rakim who really took time to write. I remember when I first heard the song I Got It Made by Special Ed I thought it was dope!..When I saw his video I thought he was cute but it was much more than looks that had people buzzin. That song was tight. He laced his verses…Times have changed and music has now taken on a whole new form….I kinda see how this happened. People like a catchy hook they can sing to…Hooks are what really makes a song. If you hear a song for the first time that you really like you usually think of the hook first…..Artist like Soulja Boy create catchy hooks and people latch on to the song and the artist. I won’t lie I even found myself singing along as I heard his song Kiss me Through The Phone because I thought it was a cute hook. The bottom line is, music has been diluted so much until we sometimes loose focus on what quality music really is….I don’t know Joe?
