Cusswords vs Cursewords vs Profanity vs Vulgarity

Everyone is quick to say Richard Pryor was a genius (and he was), everyone is quick to praise the latest Martin Scorcese film… all laced with those 7 deadly words…but NO ONE has a problem with it until it’s in MUSIC.

I dont understand this method of thought at all.

I keep hearing, “I don’t tolerate hearing profane lyrics in music…” But I have never once heard, “That movie was pretty good, but all the cussing ruined it for me.

I mean, why is Music under a more sensitive radar than any other form of entertainment? And why do grown people still hide behind this excuse ? HBO is the most popular network on television – and EVERYTHING on that station has a cussword or two… (or 3 or 4 or 640) … but nobody says anything about HBO’s programming …

I mean, there are Cialis and Viagra commercials on TV and Radio all day long — about SEX…and nobody bats an eyelash. Kids are listening…and they say nothing. Its all good because it’s backed by a billion-dollar drug company…

Everybody is more concerned with ‘appearance‘ than actuality. Why are you so scared of words? And why is music put under a microscope that no other form of ENTERTAINMENT is subjected to?

On the radio edit for Snoop’s ‘Gin & Juice’ they let him say that he is rollin down the street drinking, but they edit the line where he says “I got a pocket full of rubbers…” Why edit out ‘rubbers’ in a time where AIDS is killin the world? Its ass backwards.

These words were here before any of us were even born… They only have the power WE give them, like anything else. So, why continue to give something so much power? It’s only offensive because we were programmed to think they are offensive…. I want to deprogram you.

What is the difference between Luther Vandross singin about Making Love and Ludacris rappin about Fucking? Its the same act, but Luther said it nicer? I mean, that shit is ridiculous. The sex is no less nasty and wet because I call it Making Love… It is the same act !!

Grow up – stop limiting yourself.

Fuck. Shit. Bitch. Cunt. Pussy. Dick. Motherfucker. Cocksucker. Asshole.

  1. Let’s talk about the art of using profanity in Rap music. I believe this subject is very overrated in the media. “They” are quick to hand out awards and shit to actors and actresses who allow profanity to roll off their tongues for a movie lasting at least two hours, yet and still “they” are ready to condemn rap artist for expressing themselves with a few cuss words in a song which last no more than 4 minutes. Where is the equality here? If a rapper says fuck you and kiss my ass in a song it causes a stir and censorship is immediately put into place but if a actor says I’m gonna rip your fuckin head off you son of a bitch he gets a pat on the back and congratulated for nailing his role. My belief has always been, it is never good if a rapper cusses because he or she can’t find any other words to say. If these are the only words audible through out the song then it becomes monotonous and that should be an indication to elevate and expand one’s mind but if a artist uses a few choice cuss words to assist with what ever else they are saying then so be it! Dose anybody really know what it’s about? It is all about being controlled. We are no better than Communist if we put limits on freedom of speech. They might as well take every Fuck, Shit, Bitch and so on, out of every movie created with profanity in the script. We might as well all walk around with a squeaky clean image. I totally agree with you Griff they scrutinize the Rap and Hip Hop community but sweep everything else under the rug. When it comes to profanity in Rap music I believe it doesn’t matter what you say, what matters is what context it’s used in. I have new songs that some would consider offensive. Example, these are the lyrics to one of my songs “if the economy is fucked up and it ain’t coming back will white collar business men resort to selling crack” When I wrote the song and added the word fuck, that is how I was feeling at that moment. I wanted to say Fuck because I felt it gave me a little more power to get my message across. We all need to realize this is bigger than trying to limit what we say, this is a form of control over who we are and what we do. If they start with something as simple as the words we speak, next on the roster will be controlling our every move.
